Analysis of Physicochemical Characteristics of Bottom Ashes from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator

ABSTRACT
The future waste management shifts from a sanitary landfill to an incineration and a subsequent landfill. It is expected the landfill will be changed from the mixed landfill to the landfill for incinerated ashes only. The objective of this study was to characterize the physicochemical properties of the ash landfill. The ash samples were taken from three incineration facilities in Seoul and Kyonggi Province. The main tasks of this study were soil mechanics experiments, element analysis and ignition loss measurements. The mean specific gravity of bottom ashes was 2.44. The bottom ashes were well graded. The optimum water content of bottom ashes was 0.177¡0.204. The maximum dry density was 1.81¡1.94 g/cm3. According to consolidation tests, the consolidation coefficient was not available with ¡ît or log t method since there was no significant subsidence. The hydraulic conductivity with 20 blows was 5¡¿10-3¡1.3¡¿10-4 cm/s. The ignition loss was 16.3¡20.2%. The element analysis showed 0.075¡0.015% N, 3.00¡4.86% C, 0.20¡0.37% H and no S.
